As a visual artist, Indigo Lewisohn harnesses the photographic medium as a tool to explore the notion of femininity. Her art challenges the stigmatised female ideal as she apprehends the internalised conflict women and girls often have with their physical self. Primarily concerned with portraiture, she aims to give female individuals a platform to further express aspects of their identity. In her project “archetype,” Lewisohn fuses both contemporary fashion photography and expressionism in the one as she seeks to visualise the commodification of the female body. Her project pushes the boundaries of feminine representation as it deals with concurrent themes of self ideology, presentation of the self, embodiment, female identity and sexuality.
