Nick Goring
A Castle By The Sea
In the spring of 1926 Cecily Nash called off her engagement to her fiancée, Christopher Marlowe. It’s not clear how they first met but it’s thought that it was some time in 1924 whilst he was writing his first manuscript, The Fen Country. No one knows why Cecily changed her mind, but by 1928, aged 21, she had married someone else and the following year would give birth to her only child, my mother. Over the last 18 months I’ve used he copy of the book, with its handwritten inscription to my grandmother, as a map to plot a photographic journey through the Fens whilst I reflected on their love, and the impact of her decision on my life.
