In Searcher, Charly Richards documents her Grandad, Jim, exploring his dementia diagnosis and the parallels between this and his time as a historian. The title, a homage to the national award he won for finding a significant coin, also alludes to Jim’s inquisitive, searching, nature. The work intentionally holds a scientific motif, with the installation resembling a museum exhibit, acknowledging her grandad's work within the history sector. The inclusion of new images made by Richards combined with archival elements emphasises this motif but also stands to echo her Grandad’s state of being, where we find a mismatch of random memories and unconnected experiences. Ultimately, the work explores themes of identity, memory, and history.
