Death Over Indignity
Mansi A. (Umbhoray), a London-based photographer from Mumbai, holds an MFA in Photography from the University for the Creative Arts. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at The Lightbox, Woking (2023, 2024) and Sydenham Artist Trail (2023). Umbhoray’s art confronts Indian caste discrimination, an ancient system persisting despite its criminalization in 1950. Following George Floyd’s murder and a fatal assault in Hathras in 2020, she observed hypocrisy in Indian attitudes toward caste. Her series "Death Over Indignity," based on newspaper archives, features self-portraits influenced by headlines on caste atrocities, using post-digital screen-prints. As a Dalit, she aims to raise global awareness of caste discrimination, highlighting the diaspora's role in perpetuating these issues globally.
