Sarah Webb
In her seminal essay 'In Plato's Cave', Susan Sontag explores Diane Arbus' suggestion that taking pictures is 'perverse' or 'naughty'. The camera's naughty intrusion, trespass and exploitation of its subject have become the focus of my study. I am particularly interested in privacy, the practices of looking and the influence of technology, specifically camera phones, CCTV and the Internet in contemporary society. My work in progress questions the reliability and validity of surveillance technologies and the role of the observed/ observer.
