Irene Fearnside
Irene Fearnside's work involves taking photographs of old portrait paintings in an unconventional way, thus challenging the normal expectations of portrait photography. Surrounding reflections and light sources are included in her images, which at once both reveal and obscure certain parts of the painting, creating not only anonymity and mystery, but in some cases raising uncertainties as to the reality of the final scene. All these anomalies create a fascinating link between the painting, the person portrayed, and the final photographic portrait, by generating a modern record of a moment in the life of the historic artwork.
