The Empty Space
Using both stills and video this work required participants to conduct exercises encouraging embodiment and awareness, then slowly turn and hold their gaze towards the camera for up to thirteen minutes. Alone in silence with no observer but the camera and themselves, stripped of their usual markers of identity and present in the moment; can anything be seen beneath when the usual mask falls away? This work explores the implications of the 'death of the subject' and the deconstruction of the notion of an enduring, essential self on contemporary portraiture practice.
