The Animal Within
"The Animal Within' explores human relationship to the great apes. Through the use of contemporary portraiture Harrison challenges the idea of the brutal-ness by choosing to photograph females for their delicateness, making the work explore the idea of feminine beauty. The masks create a new identity for the individuals as well as concealing the true identities of the women. These images were produced to make viewers question what they believe they are seeing, and what they actually are seeing. Firstly the portrait of a woman is seen before looking closer and being faced with a dead, life-less ape looking back. Thus, allowing the subjects to be read for what they are - ourselves, the inner and outer beauty of animals.
