Laura Wellings
Laura's work challenges the conventions of the studio portrait, considering the limited representation within portraiture and how little information the viewer is actually presented with.Laura's most recent body of work, Faces, consists of grids of nine seemingly identical portraits. Although each individual image doesn't give the viewer much information, presenting them in series invites them to identify differences and similarities, almost interrogating the subject. Working with a range of lo-fi photography methods, Laura is exploring both the traditional approaches to portraiture through using film and a 9-lens camera, but also using camera phone technology to represent today's mass production and convenience of making images, and how developments in photography have reduced the value of the portrait.
