Phantom LimbsFrozen bodies fallen asleep with missing limbs active elsewhere. Based on an interest in movement and behaviour, Emma Backlund's work explores relationships to the physical body. Phantom Limbs investigates processes where engagement and distance coexist, and seems to propose an intense activity within the passive. Separating the body from its familiar form and anatomy, the photographs create a space in which an integral play between detached numbness and static movement is performed. The fragmentation questions what a body will become, when an artificial nature starts to complicate our experience of material reality and our biological selves.
