On March 18 2016, the European Union and Turkey signed an agreement to deport migrants who cross the Aegean Sea to the Greek Islands from Turkey in exchange for financial help. This agreement took effect the day I arrived on the island of Lesbos, on which thousands of refugees have landed since last year. I wanted to find out more about the immediate effect of this deal and its impact on refugees, volunteers, locals and the island. The future of the island seems uncertain - the tourists are long gone and the people of Lesbos fear that their island will be remembered for its detention camp and the deportation of refugees.
