Helen Crute
Photographs prompt memory. They show people and places which no longer exist; remind us of our past; inspire joy or tears. I visited the battlefields of the Somme as part of my final year's work. Fate dictated the images, as the weather it was cold and foggy. Seeing the "Somme Crosses" in Durham Cathedral moved me immensely. They stood on the battlefields 100 years ago where thousands of men, on both sides, died. The aim of this work is to remind us what happens when evil gains the upper hand. Nature has healed the landscape, but the scars remain. Whilst it is important not to dwell on the past, it is equally important to learn from it.
