How to Build a Nation
This project started with my own need to clarify what it means to belong somewhere, and not somewhere else, and to be labelled a Spanish, or English, or Galician. How to Build a Nation explores the multiple dimensions that compose our national identities: national myths; how the view of The Other shapes us; conflict, inside and outside the nation; geography as shaper of national identities; the role of the state and other power institutions. A realist approach is put in opposition to the constructed nature of nationhood, aiming at showing the contradictions, at surfacing the structures and beliefs that make possible for most of us to take nationhood as a given, a transparent, obvious yet unseen reality.
