Persistence of Memory, 2023
Persistence of Memory explores the uncanny beauty and cultural complexity of contemporary ruins of post-industrial communist architecture in Romania. As an immigrant artist living in the UK, I am interested in the balance of presence and absence inherent in these spaces and reflected within my own migrant identity, within the transience of human existence, and the passing of time. Derelict shells of buildings discarded and broken things that once served a purpose and marks on the surfaces of buildings are traces of history and become metaphorical narrative markers of the relationship between people and the built environment. Reflecting on my experience of displacement and belonging, I seek to create a narrative examining the interplay between personal, political, and environmental correlations of memory, identity, and the human connection and attachment to constructed environments.
