With Ireland’s Decade of Centenary (2012-2022) under way, this project is an examination of women’s experiences in the Irish state after its establishment in 1922. The project looks at what the Irish state meant for women’s everyday lives and the changes that came about in the 1970s. The series of six images represents the legislation which directly impacted women, from a lack of access to contraception and reproductive healthcare, to censorship, as well as the dominance of the Catholic Church. The series ends on a note of hope, as the decade saw great steps taken to improve women’s rights. The project was inspired by the centenary of women’s suffrage and the Repeal movement in 2018.
