Through a Glass Darkly
“Through a glass darkly” means to have a limited view of reality. This series seeks to explore the finery found in a colour that many consider melancholy. In western society, black is often used to represent misery, depression, fear, loss and mourning. In forgone eras, it was even thought to be evil. But these representations are so limiting. Black also portrays power, elegance, and quietness. There is strength and serenity that can be found in black. These gentle still life images attest that there is calm and splendour in black. Clarity is not just about adding light but understanding and acceptance. The darkness is not in seeing the all-black countenance; the darkness is not recognising its beauty and grace.
