Finnish Disease Heritage is the name given to a group of 50 hereditary diseases that are most commonly found in people of Finnish descent. These diseases have developed over many generations due to genetic isolation, which has resulted in the founder effect, and genetic drift. Rejio Norio originally discovered these genetic patterns in 1966, by tracing family lineage through extensive records kept by the Lutheran Church. The project looks at both the scientific research that has gone into discovering these hereditary diseases; and also the Finnish landscape, which has a large part to play in the development of FDH. All the images have a stark, clinical feel to them, and represent the isolation involved in the genetic heritage of Finland.
