The Birdman of Salonika
The Birdman of Salonika explores the concept of reincarnation through the story of my ancestor, Paul Denys Montague: a zoologist and anthropologist who flew for the Royal Flying Corp (RFC) on the forgotten Macedonian Front during World War I. Whilst wearing an authentic RFC uniform, the project invites the viewer to follow my footsteps through England, Greece and North Macedonia, where Paul once flew and meditate on themes of memory, meaning and loss. Reaching his crash site which was photographed by the Germans, and lying in the very same spot his body lay 106 years ago, the project also invites the beholder to appreciate the inexorable connection that exists between the living and the dead through the eternal soul.
