Andy Bir
Andy Bir’s practice focuses on gaining an awareness of the internal realities that we construct in relation to trauma. When he makes work that gives visibility to an internal reality, his current emotional response to past trauma becomes anchored to something of his own making. The link between his emotional state and something self-made allows him to understand that his brain won’t let go of what his body no longer feels because of the reality that he has cultivated inside himself. Rather than remaining the victim of another person’s actions, he becomes the victim of his own imagination and moves into a space that feels much easier to navigate. His practice includes performance, text, sculpture, photography, and moving image.
