DONGPO
DONGPO (동포) meaning brethren or people of the same ancestry is a Korean term which embraces the Korean diaspora whilst emphasising links among various overseas groups around the globe. New Malden is such a place. A leafy green suburb of South West London, it is one of the most densely populated areas of Koreans in Europe. Since the 1970s it has been home to many South Koreans who left political turmoil and economic hardships back home. North Koreans have since followed suit, fleeing a dictatorship to find refuge on British soil. As a Korean born but British raised individual, this process of immersive documentation is an attempt at reconnecting with my Korean heritage and investigates the Korean diaspora.
