Primitive Theatre
Roland Barthes called photography "a kind of primitive theatre… a figuration of the motionless and made-up face beneath which we see the dead". The series explores the boundaries of this idea. Registration of a human body or face on the photograph transforms them into objects that have been snatched from the continuity of life. Similar to theatre photography objectifies the body of a model. The more symbolic the content of a photograph, the less important the personality of a model (actor) and the real circumstances in which the picture was taken. On the other hand, the objectifying of the human body equalizes it with other objects and animate them. A gesture reveals itself as a very important way of communication between the human spirit and material world.
