These portraits form part of a project that I hope will develop and grow for many years to come. The initial idea was to document people in the hope of ascertaining an identity of a populace, whilst looking at my personal Identity and documenting nuances of life in a post Apartheid society. My subjects are South Africans, strangers and friends. I grew up in the shadow of Apartheid - the neighbour I never met. Making these pictures has enabled me to truly engage with the world. I do not plan to stage them; the images rather become interpretations of past experiences and at the same time spontaneous moments that seek to create a narrative about the people I have come across.
