Emergence
'Emergence' is an ongoing series shot on the floodplains of the River Ouse in Sussex. It explores depths of watery blackness, ultimately surfacing with small pearls of light. The work takes as its wellspring the diaries of Virginia Woolf, who lived by and ultimately drowned in the river. Woolf wrote of “slipping tranquilly off into the deep water of my own thoughts navigating the underworld”. This project is a response to this spectral place, but also reflects a fairytale-like quest to find hope in the dark, a mediation on photography as an alchemical conduit for the otherworldly. The large, delicate prints, fragments of the original 5x4 negatives, are intended to be exhibited in the round, creating an immersive experience.
