The South Road
Pigeon racing, long practiced throughout Europe, was recently impacted by events surrounding Britain’s exit from the EU. Where once pigeon fanciers could bring their birds across the English Channel to France, Belgium and as far away as Spain for the race back to the UK, after Brexit these races became difficult to achieve due to new regulations surrounding the transport of birds between EU and non-EU countries. This work takes its title from the name given to a group of racing clubs who compete in races in the south to north direction, The South Road Combine. Looking at themes including national and personal identity, masculinity, human-animal relationships and borders, the project delves into the often-hidden world of the pigeon fancier.
