Hard To Swallow
In a world where consumer culture is king, we are encouraged to consume contradictory messages that are sold to instantly gratify our appetites, in an attempt to become ‘better’ versions of ourselves. We are told that in good taste, we may follow a system that will nourish and sustain us. We are permitted to sample our desires and go back for more, whether or not this is sustainable for ourselves or environments. Hard to swallow explores these ideas by commenting on capitalist culture. The images present excessive material consumption by using visual constructs of food to portray themes such as beauty and desirability. These traits are presented in an abstract form to represent how material ideologies create vigorous consumer cycles.
