John Inns
As Birrarung meanders through Melbourne, its surface reflects the impacts of post-colonialism on the river and the surrounding environment. Conventional boundaries of photographic practice are challenged by inviting the water within the river to collaborate in the photographic process and reveal the hidden memories and forces that lie beneath. Photographic negatives are submerged into water collected from the same site where they were exposed. The river reworks the negatives in unpredictable ways, creating new photographs that are corrupted and transformed by the water. The original memory of the place is erased and replaced by a photographic amnesia. The resulting images are faded and abstracted, defying, and challenging recognition.
