Dawna Mueller
Unforgotten–My Journey Home
Unforgotten–My Journey Home explores the power of images in relation to memory, history and ancestry and traces Mueller’s ancestral roots in rural Manitoba, Canada. A child of the ‘Sixties-Scoop’, Mueller was taken from her Métis/Anishinaabe mother at birth and placed into a Canadian-Ukrainian family. The ‘Sixties-Scoop’ was an abhorrent period in Canadian history where the federal and provincial governments attempted to assimilate Indigenous children into non-Indigenous families with the singular goal of cultural annihilation. This project is Mueller’s reclamation journey into her Indigeneity. Mueller used a large-format analogue camera and self-developed multiple exposure negative photographs to create a poignant narrative of bridging cultures and embracing ancestral connections.
